- Not so gloomy! The plot is thickening in the set-top market and one critical
- success factor will IMHO turn out to be the capacity to seamlessly integrate
- with a good, friendly, multitasking desktop OS suitable for "family" use.
-
- Microsoft may try to compete here, but frankly I don't think they have the OS to
- go with it. The best they can do here is to deliver "communication software"
- and "OS support" and "developer toolkits" for PCs, but developers will still do
- their work on a different system than they run it on. Any kind of Windows
- product in this market will be expensive, expansive, bug-prone, unfriendly and
- unwieldy.
-
- So no, marketing an Amiga-based set-top box doesn't mean you can abandon the
- high-end. In fact you'll need it more than ever. It's just a matter of
- strategic insight (something somebody out there definitely lacks if he wants to
- sell AT at this stage) and not letting standard "modern management" textbook
- thinking get the better of you.
-
- The main worry might be the PPC development. But common sense dictates that,
- even IF this company is only interested in making cheap TV extensions, they will
- push ahead with the PowerAmiga. If not for the performance (which WILL be a
- factor in the `network computing' battle), then for availability and for Good
- Old Cost Reduction(tm).
